Instructor Background

WELCOME!

My name is Nathan Boguslavsky and I am the chess instructor at Chess Kings Academy. I am currently 17 years old and in my Senior year of high school at Glen Allen. I have been playing chess ever since I was in 1st or 2nd grade and I have over 4 years of teaching experience with national certification from the United States Chess Federation as a tournament director and chess coach. I have taught students of all backgrounds and experience level. I have also attended 5 scholastic championships in Richmond, Virginia. I believe that my organizational skills, desire to learn, positive initiative, student communication skills, and ability to work well under pressure, allow me to learn and perform a crucial role in creating interactive curricula for students. Furthermore, my ability to generate lesson plans with specific objectives relating to the learning process. I believe that this allows me to make a positive impact on all students.

Teaching Career

Timeline of Events:

June 2016 - July 2016

As a chess instructor, I initially began teaching in late 6th grade. This is a little bit of irony involved in this as initially my goal was to become a neighborhood math teacher with my friend. However, this changed when a parent of a student contacted me and asked me to teach their students how to play chess. These classes were scheduled and directed by the parents and only had 3 or 4 students involved. This was an eye opening experience for me because this eventually inspired to create my own chess courses.

Early June 2017 - August 2017

After my 7th grade year of Middle School I decided to restart my chess classes and started building my first chess course, which was later titled "Level 1: Foundations of Chess." These chess classes were run through the local libraries in Henrico County. The libraries provided me with meeting rooms which had projectors, tables, chairs, and various other appliances needed to teach a class. These chess classes were taught and directed by me with around 8 - 9 students involved. At the end of the course we were able to run around 8 or 9 classes spanning the length of the summer.

March 2018 - March 2020

This was a very significant time period for me in my teach career. This is when I began developing my first course titled, "Foundations of Chess." This was a course that students the fundamentals of chess like how to move the chess pieces, how to setup a chess board, and a very in depth run down of all rules associated with chess. This course had 13 - 15 students and spanned around 16 weeks throughout the end of the 17-18 school year (8th grade) and the summer of 2018. In this time period I was also hired by Legacy Chess Academy and was fortunate enough to teach in multiple different summer camps including one at the Richmond Montessori School.

In October 2018, I was hired to my first official chess instructor position at Curie Learning. I had the opportunity to learn from some of the best instructors and administrators and their respective teaching strategies and techniques. I was now in 9th grade, and to this day I am very thankful that they gave me to develop my skills as a chess instructor. I was able to develop my second chess course which was initially titled, "Level 2: Chess Tactics and Strategy" which was later changed to "Level 2: Advanced Chess Tactics I." Curie Learning gave me the opportunities to teach multiple renditions of my chess classes to students of all ages and backgrounds. I gained experience in communicating with parents and students and was able to prosper as a chess instructor.

March 2020 - Present

When the COVID-19 hit this had a significant impact on my instruction. It was a very large learning curve in adapting to a virtual environment and required multiple months of readjustment of my classes to fit the needs of students virtually. In these months of having no school due to the closure, I was able to create my own business in which I currently teach on going chess courses. I love working and learning with students of different ages and backgrounds.

Certifications and Achievements

By becoming a certified tournament director, this enables me to run my own chess tournaments under the United States Chess Federation. As a club tournament director, I am allowed to run tournaments up to 50 students.

Chess Instructor Certification

In going through the certification process to become a chess coach, I had the opportunity to learn from various chess teachers and this allowed me to advance my knowledge and experience in teaching chess.
